Did you or someone you know miss the kindergarten info night last week? The recording is up on the district website. Please share with anyone you know who might be interested in our school. Also, Angela is happy to do building tours for potential families. This is a great way for new families to see firsthand our amazing educational program. Please spread the word!
Mark your calendars! The next general PTO meeting is Monday, March 7, at 7 p.m. at Wickliffe. We offer three general meetings a year - these are great opportunities for parents/caregivers to come and learn more about how the PTO is working to serve our community. We are excited to see you there! An agenda will be sent out in the upcoming weeks!
Shhh... it's a secret... Marvin, our beloved custodian that all students know and love, is retiring before the end of the school year. Marvin does not want to be recognized; however, we can not let the opportunity go to celebrate him in some way. Marvin has loved and helped take care of our children for many, many years. Please help us honor Marvin by creating cards or pictures with your children for Marvin and drop them off in the office. The PTO will collect all cards/pictures and gift them to Marvin before his last day. The PTO is also purchasing a gift card for Marvin; if you would like to contribute to this gift card, you can leave cash or a check written to the Wickliffe PTO at the front desk with Teresa. Alternatively, you can VEMO @dawn-hofherr with the subject "Marvin."
The deadline for participating is Wednesday, March 9!
Thanks in advance for helping us celebrate Marvin!
We need your help! Volunteer to help for one or all of the nights of the Informal Art Show. We appreciate your help with making the Informal Art Show a success!
Thanks to the support of two generous families, the teachers/staff now have two new microwaves! One microwave is in the teachers' lounge and the other is in the makers' areas on the first floor.
MARK YOUR CALENDAR: The Spring Flower Sale starts on February 22!
We can order amazing plants from Foertmeyer and support our school. Flower pickup is scheduled for May 6, 2022. Keep a lookout for catalogs scheduled to come home next Tuesday, February 22, with your child.
Walking Club is back and is available to all students during their lunch recess to get moving and earn feet! We are looking for volunteers over the lunch hour to help guide students on their path. Please sign up to help on Tuesdays or Thursdays by using the Sign-Up Genius: https://www.signupgenius.com/go/8050944aca72da02-walking
When: Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunch recess.
Where: Outdoor loop when recess is outdoors and in the gym when recess is indoors. Volunteers will be onsite to supervise and guide students on their path.
How: Students will receive foot charms for participating during indoor walking. When outside, students will earn foot charms based on the number of laps completed. We will accept a $1 donation to cover the cost of the backpack keychain/bracelet (that can hold the charms). Students will keep their keychain/bracelet until the end of the year while they continue to collect charms!
Coming soon! Our inaugural Informal Art Show will be held 6-8 p.m. on March 1, 2, and 3 at Wickliffe. This is a family-friendly event where you and your family can see your child’s individual artwork displayed and purchase it to bring home at a later date. If purchased, it will be framed and ready for display at home. The cost will be $30 for each child’s artwork.
Without our usual Informal Affair event, the Informal Art Show is now our biggest fundraiser this year. We need our Wickliffe community to come together and make this art show a success for our school!
In order to make this event as safe as possible, masks will be required. Additionally, we have organized the event so that families can be more spread out:
March 1 - Families with last names starting with A through I
March 2 - Families with last names starting with J through Q
March 3 - Families with last names starting with R through Z
If your last name falls on a night you are unable to attend, please feel free to attend the night that works best for your family. And if you are unable to attend any of the three nights, please don’t hesitate to reach out if you still want to buy your child’s framed artwork.
There will be raffles for teacher experiences, business donations, and beverage wagons! Raffle tickets will be available to buy on the nights of the event, but you can also purchase raffle tickets early.
We look forward to seeing you and your families at the first-ever Informal Art Show! All proceeds benefit our children. We are excited to continue to provide fun-filled events with the goal of raising money for the cultural art and educational enrichment programs for our Wickliffe students.
Last week I had the opportunity to attend a read aloud and conversation entitled “Changing the World One Word at a Time” featuring Jacqueline Woodson, an African American writer of books for children and adolescents and a MacArthur Fellow recipient.
In 2015 a group of Wickliffe teachers along with our beloved Mr. Collaros had the opportunity to hear her speak at a progressive educators’ conference in Brooklyn. At the time, I found her to be very inspirational, giving me new insights into how to have conversations with children on diversity, equity, and inclusion.
As we continue to celebrate Black History Month, I would like to share the recording of Jacqueline Woodson. Please note, this link is password protected (password: Woodson2022! - don't forget the !) and will be available for 14 days - only until February 24, 2022.
I hope this will affirm the conversations you are already having with your families or perhaps give you some “food for thought” as you continue.
If there is any topic that you would like me to explore, please reach out to me at fkassoy@uaschools.org.
